Mabel Lander\'s Letter to Fred Jerram - Transcribed - First Draft

67 Baker St W1
Sunday Dec 17

My dear Fred

Yes I am one of the two sisters - Maud being the other - with whom you
played at Sutton Hill - and happy times they were - it is marvellous how
you remember the details so vividly, and Arthur will be amused, I am
sure, when I show him your letter ! He has grown exactly like father was
at that age - he has 3 children, and the eldest girl is engaged - he
sold Sutton Hill 3 years ago, and was lucky in getting a small house
about 3 miles away - now fortune has favoured him again, and he has
succeeded in getting an ideal farm for his boy John, and Jill his twin,
will keep house for him - it is a darling little house too and as far no
snow has appeared - in lovely country the other side of the Severn.
Winifred is Mainies neice - her brother Eaton\'s child - there were 2 but
the boy was killed after the last war in the early days of gliding.
Captain Gardiner rang me up and it is arranged for your silver to be
packed and taken away tomorrow morning, and I hope it will arrive safely
- It is a lovely tea-set and the salts are beautiful too.

I was so sorry to hear Muriel had had a bad accident - I hope it was not
anything serious - I remember her - dark and handsome and Winifred fair
and jaunty in my recollection when we used to come across to Polperro
from Looe. It is exactly a year ago today - on this day of the week -
December the 19th that Marnie died - and I have never ceased to be
thankful that she went when she did. She has been in wretched health for
a long time and life was no pleasure to her - and the damage from the
Doodles was very bad all round her neighbourhood - I was glad to be in
London and able to do what I could for her. My work, teaching the piano,
is almost non existent, but I have been lucky in having the princesses
within reach of London and I go down twice a week and spend very happy
days - lunch, lessons and tea, with them. I have taught them since
Princess Elizabeth was just 8, and it had been wonderfully interesting
seeing them grow up - they are both very musical, in fact really talented.

I am going down on Friday to see their Pantomime, they are so clever at
that too, and put on a really splendid show.

With all best wishes - and sometime when you are in London in less
strenuous times, it would be a great pleasure to renew acquaintances

Yours very sincerely

Mabel Lander

{1939 and 1944 both had Sunday 17th December, but the \"doodle\" reference
implies it is 1944}

I was very pleased to find so much excellent detail on the wonderful tale of errant Landers, the doctor and the vicar. There is a line of Thomas Eaton Landers in my family, so I am sure that these are the same folk, and that I have some fraction of my DNA passed down from the errant Doctor. My Grandfather was Thomas Eaton Lander, it then skipped a generation, and now my cousin who is the oldest son of the oldest son, is also Thomas Eaton. My interest in this branch of the family was sparked off this weekend when I met someone by chance who has detailed Lander family research going back to 1600s in England. I am planning to work out if her Landers are the same gang too, if so we could join these records up together. Her tale is of West Country Landers who went to Telford, which is a good match for the rural Shropshire Landers. They brought stone working skills with them from the quarries of Dorset. The same stone working skills then took them to London to work as Monumental Masons for the growing London Cemeteries, and there are lots of good records of the Dorset and London parts of the story. What I want to do is to see if we can get a match on the Shropshire stone working Landers with the wonderful Australian love adventure. Sad to hear of their lost babies, but still wonderful to know that all of this crazy stuff went on. I will keep you posted with my findings. Best wishes !

I've made some recent discoveries about John Benneyworth and his wife, Ann (née Parrey), the most significant of which is that John joined the 2nd battalion, 3rd Foot Guards of the British Army in 1803. He fought under Wellington in the Peninsula Campaign against Napoleon, and at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 (at Château Hougoumont), receiving the Waterloo Medal afterwards. He was discharged from the Army on health grounds in 1817.

Fascinating to read the story Of Thomas Eaton Lander (my GG Uncle). The Landers have all been from Shropshire and in particular Shifnal where I was born also! Know all about Mabel, Arthur Edward was my Grandfather. Keen to know any more or supply any details you may require.
