The "ROTAS" Square

Hello Everyone !!.....just thought I would mention that I saw a programme on BBC4 tonight at 10pm (Thursday 29th Nov) called "The Dark Ages : an Age of Light" which about 10 minutes in looked at The ROTAS Square (made up of the words Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas) which appeared on ancient buildings etc. A most interesting 5 minutes looking at the meanings and origins of this "symbol" which is only too familiar to us all. It's certainly worth a watch on BBC I-Player....but don't leave it too long as I don't know how long it will be available to watch....the rest of the programme was pretty interesting as well.
My best wishes to you all...keep warm and dry !!

Re: The "ROTAS" Square

Thanks for that, Exmoor Doug. I've just had a look while I was on the computer this afternoon, and it was indeed a very interesting comment on the origins of the "Rotas Square". I'd no idea that it dated back to the early Christians, although I think I remember previously hearing something about the "Paternoster" arrangement of the letters. I like that sort of programme anyway, although I've missed most of this series so far. It's certainly worth a look for those with an interest in history.

Re: The "ROTAS" Square

A lot of the stuff that Richard put into Catweazle is interesting and not "made up" Sometime back, when we used to send the newsletter out, we did a series in it about various Catweazlean words and exclamations and Karen did a great one on the magic square. Perhaps I could revive them for everyone, (if I can find them)

Re: The "ROTAS" Square

That would be a great idea Carol.....I'm sure there are many who, like myself, joined after these old newsletters, and who would find these articles a most interesting read. Hope you can find them !!....Do you have any incantations laying about to stop it raining ??!!
I wish all Weazlers everywhere the very best for 2013 and look forward to seeing you all once again at Hexwood.
