I have a female convict ancestor who claimed to have a husband Henry Eustes in the 52nd Regiment. We have been unable to find any record of her marriage which would have occurred just after the 1841 census. She lived in Bristol and I would like to know if there was any such thing as a 52nd Regiment in Bristol around 1841.
It is possible that she made the whole thing up as I have been told some single female convicts pretended to have a husband to protect themselves. It is also possible that he promised marriage but desserted her.
Any advice as to where to look (I am in Australia so have no idea) would be much appreciated.
