As a newbie to the world of Raw image processing and a recent convert to RSE. Is there any method to permit the opening of.cR2 images in Raw Shooter Essentials?

Hi John,

The last G-series camera to be supported was the G6, so the simple answer is that you can't open G9 files in RSE.

But:

There are a couple of things you can try. Both involve converting to DNG using free software from Adobe, and then using a Hex editor to either:
Edit the RSE executable itself
or
Edit the DNG files
to replace all instances of "G6" with "G9".

Both methods work for the 40D and 400D (and the second works for RSP as well) so I assume they would also work for the G9. It depends on whether you think it's worth the effort.

Ultimately, fallback position is Raw Therapee if all other attempts fail but haven't given up yet.

It's Stuart - but don't worry about it :)

You must use a hex editor, not notepad or similar text editor.

I suggest Cygnus free edition from http://www.softcircuits.com/cygnus/fe/

Load Rawshooter.exe (best to back-up first), go to Edit | Replace and replace G9 with G6 as in this image.



Click Replace all.

Next download and install the DNG converter from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3941
It's packaged with the Camera Raw plugin which you can ignore.

RSE should now be able to open the DNG files.
