Triathlon Training

Hi
ive been to Rawai muay thai before and really loved it,,since being back in the UK I have started competing in Triathlons and am thinking that Pkuket would be the perfect place to train for them. thinking about doing my own session in the morning and doing muay tahi in the afternoon!

only question is regarding my bike. Will it be possible to bring a bike over on an aeroplane?

Country: England

Re: Triathlon Training

That's a very good question. I don't know the answer but I bet if you contact the airline you plan to use they could tell you. If you come with your bike make sure you buy the ticket all the way to Phuket, not just to Bangkok, and ask all the airlines involved if you can take the bike with you. The Thai airlines that fly from bangkok to Phuket might have different policies on bikes allowed, etc. The airlines probable have bike travel box specifications (weight and measurements) which you have to follow in order to take the bike on the plane.

If you find out please let me know as this information might be good to add to the website.

Furthermore, you're right, Phuket is a great place to train for a triathlon. There are beautiful beaches where you can swim and hilly coastal roads to run and bike on. The weather is hot and humid which will challenge anybody's stamina. All in all it's a wonderful place to exercise.

Re: Triathlon Training

ive been in the Airfreight Industry for the last twelve years.
The answer is you can bring almost anything you like on an aircraft as luggage, but you will pay ALOT of freight to get it over. Probably more than what the bike is worth. You will need to break the bike down (take off the wheels etc) as the airlne will charge you for your cubic measurment rather than actual weight.
You can incorporate it into your checked in luggage and not bring clothes? But thats being unrealistic.

Your only other option is using an Express courier like FedEx, DHL..

FedEx do not have an office in Phuket and they use a third party agent.
DHL do have an office at the (via BKK)airport and do deliver using their own courier but it wouldnt be any cheaper than $400 each way to ship it.
All goods have to come through Bangkok airport before being shipped fown to Phuket airport for delivery and it can take a long time for Customs in Bangkok to clear your goods before on forwarding to Phuket.

My advice, if your asking....
Hire a Mountain bike on the island
or
Purchase one over in Phuket.. It will be cheaper to buy one rather than paying the airfreight to ship it to Phuket and then back home.

hope this helps.

Re: Triathlon Training

i gotte tell you that training for muay thai/boxing/mma and other martial arts is completely different than training for marathons or triathlons...

although there will be some carry over you'd be much better off focusing on building up aerobic endurance in your various sports paired with focusing on your core, calfes and hamstrings in form of mini workouts...

Re: Triathlon Training

i would further recommend you looking into tabata intervalls (in your case using: sprinting, bike sprints, swim sprints)
those can help you loads when trying to stay fast and explosive while at the same time raising your aerobic endurance a bit in the process(mainly anaerobic)
