New Moon Sabbaths?

A friend's husband is insisting on observing new moon Sabbaths. She and I can't find any command in the Bible that these days are a Sabbath, only that trumpets should be sounded.
I know one new moon is a Sabbath, Trumpets. Some believe the new year new moon is also a Sabbath.
What is the truth here? A

Re: New Moon Sabbaths?

I do watch for new moons because I follow an observable calendar but I do not observe the "new moon" as a "sabbath" (with the exception of the 7th month i.e. Trumpets).

The FEASTS of the Lord are listed in Lev 23 and the monthly new moon cycle is not amonst the days the Lord calls "My feasts" and "my sabbaths."

I think many use Amos 8:5 among other verses to show a 'sabbatizing' of a new moon. See Amos 8:5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?

here is anotherIsaiah 66:23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

and another Ezekiel 46:3 Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons.

There was indeed a special acknowledgement of the new moon by the people and in duty by THE PRIESTS. See Numbers 10:10 Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God. See also Nu 28:11; 1Ch 23:31; Isa 1:13-15

I think that God's people kept it more sabbath-like over time ... but by preference and not by commandment. I say this from what I see in scripture believing, I too, have God's spirit.

Don't let anyone judge you except the body of Christ in the particulars of how you observe a day. Colossians 2:16-17 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Re: New Moon Sabbaths?

We've searched all the references we can find that pertain to new moons. There is one that indicates that two new moons might be observed as Sabbaths but no more than that.
Ezr 3:5 And afterward [offered] the continual burnt offering, both of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of the LORD that were consecrated, and of every one that willingly offered a freewill offering unto the LORD.
Some observe the new year new moon and some don't and honestly, I'm not sure what stand to take on that. Privately I spend the day in quiet study and just don't make an issue of it with anyone else. If it is God's will, He will reveal what He wants me to do about it in His time. He knows my concerns about it.
It seems to me that celebrating all the new moons when God hasn't commanded that is adding to God's word. He didn't give us authority to take away or add to His word. I do understand the purpose of calculating the new moons in spring and fall to set the Holy Days.
I don't see anything in the Bible to indicate that we are to observe all new moons as Sabbaths and that is where I look for truth, to the Bible. But trying to convince someone whose mind is made up is nearly impossible and this man is well versed in the scripture. She and I are both very worried about him. A

Re: New Moon Sabbaths?

In regards to your inquiry, here is an excerpt from my article "Sabbath: Counted From The New Moon?":

If every New Moon Day is a Sabbath, why do we not find any command from YHVH to rest upon it (with the exception of Yom Teruah, the New Moon of the 7th month)? Shouldn't we find it listed among the Appointed Times of Leviticus 23, since after all, as the favorite text of Lunar Sabbatarians says, "the moon was made for Appointed Times"? What explanation can be given to the fact that nowhere in Scripture has the command of God been recorded to cease from all labors upon the New Moon Day, or upon the 29th and 30th days of each month?

If every New Moon Day is a Sabbath, why do we find God commanding labor upon the day, and labor being exacted upon the day?

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, On the first day of the first month shalt thou set up the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation. ... Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he. And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up. (Exodus 40:1,2,16,17 -- read all of Exodus 40:1-33 to see how much labor was done this New Moon Day)

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD'S house should be built. ... Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. ... Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD. (Haggai 1:1,2,8,12)

If every New Moon Day is a Sabbath, why do we find God commanding Zerubbabel to gather wood and build upon the first day of the month? Recall God's judgment against the man who gathered wood on the Sabbath in Numbers 15:32-36.

If every New Moon Day is a Sabbath, we should find the command to make the Sabbath offering on the New Moon Days as well. No such command was given. Only the daily offering was to accompany the New Moon offering. (Numbers 28:15)

I hope this is clear for you. if you have any questions, feel free to write again. God bless!

in agape,
