Ruling Favors Jewish Converts

Israel's Supreme Court judges (11) ruled Monday that converts to Judaism
could be eligible for citizenship. The judges deliberated for five years
before pronouncing this possibility which is favored by the Conservative
and Reform Movements but looked down upon by the Orthodox branch of Judaism.
Jews, from anywhere in the world are eligible for automatic Israeli citizenship.

Down By The Riverside
[storyline also submitted by Sam & Faye
Stamper- MI]

Just outside Fredricksburg, Virginia lies a river that runs through Falmouth
Waterfront Park. It is a peaceful river location that is perfect for baptisms
by immersion. Thats what the "Rev." Todd Pyle of the Cornerstone Baptist
Church in Stafford thought until officials for the Park intervened.
Fredericksburg-Stafford Park Authority officials tried to break up a recent
baptism of 12 new memebrs of Pyle's church. The reason cited was that the
ceremony "might be offensive to nearby swimmers or other people using the
park." Pyle was allowed to finish the baptism, but then he was asked to
leave.Christian Defense Coalition, The Rutherford Institute and even the
The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia all have sided with the
Cornerstone Baptist Church claiming park officials tramples the church members
Constitutional rights. Brian Robinson, director of the Fredericksburg-Stafford
Park Authority said such groups should apply for permits to do things "out
of the ordinary." Robinson said, "We don't want to tread on anybody's First
Amendment or constitutional rights. What we try to discourage is anything
not formally permitted that just sort of occurs spontaneously."

Amnesty International Gives No Amnesty to U.S.

Amnesty International's 2004 annual report seems to target the United States
for its "war on terrorism." The introduction to the report stated that: "The
UN faced a crisis of legitimacy and credibility because of the US-led war
on Iraq and the organization's inability to hold states to account for gross
human rights violations. International human rights standards continued to
be flouted in the name of the "war on terror", resulting in thousands of
women and men suffering unlawful detention, unfair trial and torture –
often solely because of their ethnic or religious background."

Irene Khan, Amnesty International's Secretary General wrote, "There is no
path to sustainable security except through respect for human rights. The
global security agenda promulgated by the US Administration is bankrupt of
vision and bereft of principle. Sacrificing human rights in the name of security
at home, turning a blind eye to abuses abroad, and using pre-emptive military
force where and when it chooses have neither increased security nor ensured
liberty.

The wrath of Khan against the U.S. continued, "Double speak brings disrepute
to human rights but, sadly, it is a common phenomenon. The USA and its allies
purported to fight the war in Iraq to protect human rights – but openly
eroded human rights to win the "war on terror". The war in Iraq was launched
ostensibly to reduce the threat of weapons of mass destruction, yet the world
is awash with small arms and conventional weapons that kill more than half
a million people a year. "

The AI Report said, "More than 600 foreign nationals were detained indefinitely
without charge or trial or access to family members or legal counsel in the
US naval base in Guantánamo, Cuba, on grounds of possible links with
al-Qa'ida; others were held in undisclosed locations. There were allegations
of torture or ill-treatment of detainees held at a US base in Afghanistan
and of detainees held by US forces in Iraq following the US-led invasion
and occupation. Three people were held incommunicado without charge or trial
in the USA as "enemy combatants". Death sentences continued to be imposed
and carried out under federal and state law. There were reports of police
brutality, deaths in custody and ill-treatment of prisoners."

On an interesting note AI was not pleased with the US Supreme Courts overturning
of a Texas Sodomy law. The Amnesty International report said, "In June the
Supreme Court issued a far-reaching decision overruling a Texas sodomy law
on the ground that adults had a constitutional right to private sexual conduct
(Lawrence v Texas). The ruling invalidated laws in Texas and three other
states – Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri – which criminalized sodomy
between same-sex partners, as well as laws in nine other states – Alabama,
Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah
and Virginia – which made sodomy a crime in all cases."

Historical Happenings

May 30

0339 - Death of Eusebius, 74, early church historian. He attended the Council
of Nicea in A.D. 325, and his "Historia Ecclesiastica" contains an abundance
of detail on the first three centuries of the Early (Catholicized)Church
found nowhere else in ancient literature.

1416 - Jerome of Prague burned as a heretic by the Church. Jerome of Prague
(1365?-1416), Bohemian religious reformer, born in Prague. In 1407 he became
an associate of Bohemian religious reformer John Huss and joined him in preaching
against the abuses of the church hierarchy and the profligacy of the clergy.
After Huss was condemned by the Council of Constance, Jerome was arrested
and burned at the stake as a heretic. He, like Huss, regarded the Bible as
the ultimate religious authority, and held that Christ, rather than any
inevitably corrupt ecclesiastical official, is the true head of the church.

1431 - French heroine Joan of Arc, 19, a prisoner of the English, was burned
at the stake for heresy and for being a witch. (She was later canonized in
1920 by Benedict XV.) This young lady admittedly heard voices (in all
probability- demons) which lead her to her revolutionary conquests.

1934 - The two-day Barmen Synod ended in Germany. The resulting Barmen
Declaration affirmed that the German Confessing Church recognized Jesus Christ
to be the only authoritative voice of God, in clear contrast to all other
(i.e., Nazi) powers representing divine revelation.

Working for God or Man?

"Six days shall you do your work," says the commandment, and most of us do
our share.  But lots of people I have talked to lately feel
overworked.  I think, though, that they are not so much overworked as
under-appreciated.   Their workloads have increased, but their
paychecks have not.  They work longer and harder, and it garners not
praise, but more work.  I don't know what is being taught in business
schools these days, but they are certainly lacking instruction in customer
service and leadership, probably because such intangibles don't have an immediate
impact on the bottom line.

In times such as these it is good to reflect on a man named Jacob.
Jacob had the misfortune of working for twenty years for a man named
Laban.  Laban likely had some good qualities, but he is best remembered
for his ability to manipulate Jacob, who was no small manipulator himself,
in order to gather more wealth for himself.  He did everything he could
to get as much work out of Jacob as possible for as little pay as
possible.  In spite of such abuse, God blessed Jacob, and prospered
everything he turned his hand to do.

In the last encounter between them, Jacob said what perhaps many of us have
thought but have never had the freedom to say:

"I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not
miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks.  I did not bring
you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded
payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night.  This was my
situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and
sleep fled from my eyes.  It was like this for the twenty years I was
in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters
and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.
If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not
been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed." (Genesis
31:38-42 NIV)

That last sentence is the important one:  "If the God of my father …
had not been with me …".  Even though Laban milked Jacob for everything
he had and would have cast him off as a tattered rag when there was nothing
left to give, God saw Jacob's integrity and labor and blessed him because
of it.  And the more Laban tried to work him over, the more God blessed
him until even Laban had to acknowledge, "I have learned by experience that
the Lord has blessed me for your sake." (Genesis 30:27 NKJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote about this principle when he addressed slaves who
were Christians in the city of Ephesus:

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity
of heart, just as you would obey Christ.  …  Serve wholeheartedly,
as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord
will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free."
(Ephesians 6:5-8 NIV)

In a way, we work for God.  But more than that we're God's kids, and
God takes care of his kids.  It might take twenty years, as it did with
Jacob (remember that Jacob had some lessons to learn), but however long it
takes, God is fair and will not cheat you of your wages.

It strikes me that a final thought is in order.  It is expressed best
by one of the proverbs of Solomon, and it is a good thing to remember when
beset by what we might believe is an unfair situation.  Write this one
down and keep it in your billfold, for it is more precious than gold.

"Do not rob the poor because he is poor, nor oppress the afflicted at the
gate;  for the LORD will plead their cause, and plunder the soul of
those who plunder them."  (Prov 22:22-23 NKJV)

Anti-Porn Pastor Elected Mayor

Oakcrest Family Church pastor Jim Norwood was elected Mayor of Kennedale,
Texas with 66% of the votes in a town of 6,100 people. The interesting thing
is that Norwood and some members of his church rode a wave of popularity
because of an anti-porn crusade. The pastor and his followers take a trip
once a week to the local strip clubs and sex shops...no, not as patrons ...
but to take pictures of the cars that frequent the sites. The pictures capture
the license plate numbers which the church members then look online to find
the owner's name and address from license plate records, which are public
in Texas. The group then mails out an "I-know-where-you've-been" postcard
which reads: "Observed you in the neighborhood. Didn't know if you were aware
there is a church in the area.'' The card shows a photo of the customer's
car parked outside one of the adult businesses and includes an invitation
to come to church and/or sex addiction counselling classes. Norwood was quoted
in an AP story saying, "Anybody that knows me will say that my heart is to
try to help these people.'' He continued, "They have realized the devastation
that it's had on their life and their relationships, and they're looking
to get counseling as a way to heal or way to get out of what they're trapped
in."

Carey Says Prince Charles Should Wed

George Carey, a former archbishop of Canterbury (1992 to 2001), told The
London Times newspaper that Prince Charles should be allowed to marry his
divorced companion Camilla Parker Bowles even though her former husband is
alive. Carey said, " He is heir to the throne and he loves her. The natural
thing is that they should get married." Carey said [Christianity]"is all
about forgiveness. We all make mistakes. Failure is part of the human condition
and there is no doubt that there has been a strong loving relationship, probably
since they were very young, that has endured over the years." Charles would
be the supreme governor of the Church of England if he took the throne

Bilderberg Conference 2004

The annual meeting of the Bilderberg group is being held at the Grand Hotel
des Iles Borromees in Stresa, Italy. The meeting began Thursday June 3rd
and runs through Sunday June 6th. This will the 52nd Bilderberg Meeting and
will deal mainly with European American relations and in this context US
Politics, Iraq, The Middle East., European Geopolitics, NATO, China, Economoic
Problems and Energy, and other topics. The roots of Bilderberg go back centuries.
These international moneychangers meet secretly to manipulate the economy
to enrich themselves and enslave ordinary people. The names are familiar
to conspiracy buffs: the Rothchilds, the Rockefellers, Kuehn & Loeb,
Warburgs, etc. This gathering of Global Elitists even were able to pressure
US Congress into establishing the Federal Reserve Board, a private group
of bankers who meet to shape the money supply. Since 1954, the international
financiers have held regular annual meetings. That year they met at the
Bilderberg Hotel in Holland, and took the name "Bilderberg" for themselves.

Bush Honors Italian Freedom Fighters and Pope

President Bush went on a trip to Italy to help commemorate the June 1944
liberation of Rome and stopped by the Vatican to present Pope John Paul II
with a medal. Tens of thousands of Italian anti-war demonstrators marched
through central Rome to protest President Bush's visit. 10,000 police patrolled
for security. After a ceremony at Fosse Ardeatine, where on March 24, 1944,
German troops killed 335 innocent Italian men and boys in an abandoned quarry,
Bush visted the Pope - although he arrived late 15 minutes for the appointment.
Bush promised the Roman Pontiff that the U.S. would work for "human liberty
and human dignity". The U.S. House of Representatives voted in November of
last year that President Bush should award the government's highest civilian
honor to the Pope in 2004. Bush fulfilled the House's request and presented
the pontiff with the presidential medal of freedom, America's highest civilian
award, referring to the Pope as "a devoted servant of God."

JPII said in a shaky voice, "Mr. President, your visit to Rome takes place
at a moment of great concern for the continuing situation of grave unrest
in the Middle East, both in Iraq and in the Holy Land. In the past few weeks,
other deplorable events have come to light which have troubled the civic
and religious conscience of all." He then thanked Bush for the medal of freedom
award and said, "God bless America."

The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award,
recognizes exceptional meritorious service. The medal was established by
President Truman in 1945 to recognize notable service in the war. In 1963,
President Kennedy reintroduced it as an honor for distinguished civilian
service in peacetime to persons "for especially meritorious contribution
to (1) the security or national interests of the United States, or (2) world
peace, or (3) cultural or other significant public or private endeavors"
(Executive Order 11085 dated Feb. 22, 1963). About 400 such medals have been
awarded. Pope John XXIII was among the first 31 honorees. In 2000, the U.S.
Congress awarded its Gold Medal of Honor to John Paul II. Friday's was Bush's
third meeting with the pope since he became president.

Religious Liberals Denounce Federal Same-Sex Marriage Ban

An AP story ran the following brief, in part: A grouping of Christian, Jewish
and Sikh organizations is urging Congress to reject a proposed constitutional
amendment that would ban same-sex marriage. Twenty-six organizations, ranging
from the 2.3-million-member Episcopal Church-USA, to the 60,000 represented
by the Alliance of Baptists, said in a letter to Congress that it was not
government's job to enshrine laws reflecting a specific religious view.

"We believe the federal marriage amendment reflects a fundamental disregard
for individual civil rights and ignores differences among our nation's many
religious traditions. It should be rejected," they wrote this week.

Can you tell we live in a society built on sand? You can't tell political
parties apart much anymore by the issues and neither can you tell a religious
person on their stance on issues. The workings of the Hegelian dialectic
are certainly having their synthesizing effect in the world.

Anglicans Simmer Gay Issue until 2007

The following is an excerpt of an Official Press Statement from General Synod
2004 of the Anglican Church of Canada (June 2): "The Anglican Church of Canada
has deferred a decision on the blessing of same-sex unions for another three
years to allow a review by the Primate's Theological Commission. General
Synod, the church's highest governing body, voted Wednesday evening to ask
the commission to determine whether the blessing of same-sex unions is a
matter of doctrine and to report to the Council of General Synod by its spring
2006 meeting. It also called on the council to distribute its report to each
province, diocese and the House of Bishops for consideration. The matter
would then return to the next meeting of the General Synod in 2007. The
Archbishop of Canterbury's Commission on the blessing of same-sex unions
is also expected to issue its report later this year."

The UnJust Judge, The Widow, The Pharisee and the Publican

Luke 18:1-8 And he spake a parable unto them to this
end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in
a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was
a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.
And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though
I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will
avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said,
Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge his own elect,
which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you
that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh,
shall he find faith on the earth?

In this parable of the unjust Judge we see a man who is standing in direct
opposition to the two greatest commandments: love God and love your neighbor.
We see he is secular in that he did not fear God and that he is selfish in
that did not respect men. Jesus used an example of an unjust judge as a contrast
with God who is just.

We also see the persistance and patience of the saints portrayed by the woman
and her "continual coming" in humilty - asking for merciful justice. Jesus
used the widow again as a contrasting example for us. If an unjust judge
(who is not like God) will hear and avenge the case of a widow and stranger
(which we are not) then surely God will hear the prayers of His own children
and quickly avenge any injustices done to them.

Jesus followed up the account of the unjust judge with another parable:

Luke 18:9-14 And he spake this parable unto certain
which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other
a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank
thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or
even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that
I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much
as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful
to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather
than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and
he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

The Pharisee prayed, not to God but to himself, standing proudly before God.
He was boastful and arrogant. He was a legalist - proud of his physical
law-keeping in tithing and fasting and trusting in his works alone. He looked
down his nose narrowly at others. He was highly-esteemed by men and society
but God could look past the veneer into the heart of the man. There is no
religiosity good enough to merit God’s favor if a person's heart is wicked
- not loving God and loving his neighbor.

The publican was a base and despised member of society - a collector of taxes.
(How do you feel about an IRS agent?) The man knew he was unworthy to stand
before God so he stood "afar off." The man did not compare himself to, or
lift himself above, others. He was awed and humbled in that he couldn't even
lift his eyes to heaven. He was passionate about his repentance from sin
and his need for God's pardoning grace. There is no sin too great that God
can’t forgive if a person's heart is contrite [contrite means: grieving and
penitent for sin or shortcoming ]. This man acted humbly -despising his sin
rather than His God or even the Pharisee who belittled him - he was loving
God and loving his neighbor.

We need to guard against a self-righteous attitude. God judges you, not as
you deserve, but mercifully and justly. He imputes the righteousness of Christ
to you. He places more emphasis on the content of your heart than on outward
appearances. Each day commit yourself to strive for pureness of your own
heart. (clean the inside of the cup) As you have received an undeserved gift
of grace so you should extend grace to others when they act wrongly, realizing
that their behavior may not necessarily be the result of rebellion, but of
ignorance, inability, or thoughtlessness. Forgive and you shall be forgiven.
In this you fulfill the law of loving God, loving your neighbor - which includes
loving 'your enemies.'  The Just Judge discerns the hearts and thoughts;
therefore, be ye holy.

Isaiah 11:1-5 And there shall come forth a rod out
of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit
of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear
of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the
LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove
after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the
poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite
the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall
he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and
faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
