The Social I.Q. Test A civilized and free society uas a basic premise: A prime value and respect for the individual person. This respect includes a sacred regard for the right of individual conscience, opinion, boundary, and domain. Western Civilization and our American institutions were founded on such rational Biblical principles and transcendent humane priorities. If children lack the ability to distinguish between what is their own and what is not, they are moving in the direction of confusion, intrusion, transgression, and the resulting consequences. The example adults set before youngsters is perhaps the single most important reason such learning occurs - for better or worse. Example offers a behavioral definition of character that may, by emulation, determine a child's perception of his own value, the value of others, and reciprocal rights, privileges, and accepted responsibilities. All too often, youngsters demonstrate confusion when obliged by circumstance to make a clear distinction between "mine" and "not mine." Each opportunity to recognize and make such a fundamental distinction could be described as a Social I.Q. Test. As adults, we are obligated to help our children to make not only responsible conscious distinctions but clearly give them areas of ownership, criteria, reasonable choice, consequent responsibility, and (here's the tough part) a personal example of mature standards and functioning foresight. Such domain definitions will go far toward helping them recognize the advantages of living with others in a courteous, respectful, and healthy social manner. Each young person deserves no less. Do you and I have the courage and commitment to live what we demand of our children? I read a lot in the newspapers and internet from the iconoclasts, libertarians, and assorted humanists about "freedom," but nothing about standards for choice, foresight, and resulting responsibility. What they apparently really mean is un- inhibited license. If the foregoing does not offend the reader then you are likely already doing your part to live up to adult obligations to this generation. If you are offended, then you are more than likely part of the problem of bypassing our youngsters to your personal needs for excuse-making and self-justification. Social I. Q. Test? Try again. Grow up. Jim Baxter
