Message:   Dear Chorus,

For next week, in addition to generally reviewing all of the Beethoven works, please focus especially on:
-practicing the German of the Choral Fantasy so that the consonants will be ahead of the beat
-focus on the Sanctus and the Crucifixus of the Mass. In the Sanctus, note this: Tenors, at (p 42), ms 6 the 'new' A# on beat 4 has been low- lift, don't press this. Altos: please go higher from the E natural at the end of the top system to the F natural in the middle system. Similarly, basses, when you move from the F# at the end of the top system to the F natural in the middle system, keep this high.

Anyone absent, please note: pp56-58 (Agnus Dei) any ending of 'nobis' has been changed from an 8th note to a quarter note. All endings of vowels ("Dei" "miserere") remain shortened, sounding as an 8th note.

I ask that next week we refrain from early departures. We really need everybody on hand until 9:30! In principal this is not good as a regular practice, much as we appreciate those who must commute in from further away.

Many of you were asking about Re-Audition procedures. Here's the scoop! First, let me assure you that there is NOTHING arbitrary about this process, or about my earlier determination to release some folk until next year. I have spent long and arduous hours over my notes from last year's re-auds. Everything we do in this regard is with a very clear purpose, and being called for re-auds should not be automatically considered a bad sign! In many cases I simply want to note whether there is change in vocal character from year to year, as I may have heard something specific that I may want to follow up on in the event there is a significant change from last year. As ever, I'm looking forward these.

Those re-auditioning this year: Please bring your Beethoven Mass score. I will ask you to sing one of the three fugue subjects: *** Sancto Spiritu, Et Vitam Venturi, or Osanna in Excelsis. Then we will vocalize. Those who have worked on reading and musicianship will I am sure exhibit that improvement in their performance of these fugue subjects.

Finally, please remember that for May 7 and 8 the chorus is not called until 4:30 pm. Next week's rehearsal is at Christ Church United Methodist, Park Avenue at 60th Street, in concert formation. May 7 and 8 are at the Riverside Church, in the Assembly Hall. This will be a great concert- let's get that audience in!

Have a great week, Chorus!
Kent
