Dear Chorus,
Great work yesterday! I’m looking forward to our rehearsal tomorrow, Monday, at Christ Church from 3-7 pm. You MUST warm-up on the way to this rehearsal, as there is no time for us to do a group warm-up. What I suggest is that you really get your ‘head voice’ going, and also your articulators, including the clear French vowels (remember Mr. Grubbs nightmare lips!!) The rehearsal begins with a run-through of the Honegger, with Stravinsky from the period 4:30-5 pm and on.
Here are some notes on Honegger:
No.3 Start off well with very bright é [much eeeee inside] “Loué” and so on
No.4 Clear D on “DaviD”
No.8 Basses sing accompagnato to the tenors, but keep the pitch energy high.
There is NO final [S] on the last word of this movement!
No.11 Very OPEN for the second syllable of “L’Éternel”- drop the jaw for it.
No.14 Sopranos and altos review pitches from reh 5- reh 6. Even more eeee in “Saül”
No.15 Altos review getting your pitch from the soprano solo E
No.16 Do watch exceedingly, remembering that we will move ahead in places!
The Largamente before 12 is not as slow as we have done in the past, so watch
Sopranos and altos review pitches from rehearsal 17-18
Basses, listen for piano with the timpani before rehearsal 22. The A will be very clear.
Altos, listen to a recording for your pitching at 8 after rehearsal 28
No.17 Be fearless on your first entrance!
No.19 TB ms4 needs to be higher on the C#. This entire movement needs to be higher on the pitch.
Remember what Mr Grubb admonished about diphthongs, for example the last syllable of ‘pitié”
No.20 Alto I’s are to sing with the sopranos from 6 after rehearsal 1 until rehearsal 2
Sopranos are to sing with the altos from 6 after rehearsal 2 until rehearsal 3
No.24 Sopranos don’t lose tempo on the 16th notes with syllables
No.25 Piano will give pitch just before the orchestra begins, during the last line of narration
Shout the end!
This piece is incredible, and we’ve made tremendous strides. I’m very proud of the progress, folks. Keep it up!
See you Monday,
Kent |
