Message:   Dear Chorus,

Good work last night! We covered a lot of ground. Please review all the points we covered. Next week we will cover Part I and III choruses, {plus "he Trusted in God"} and review Part II if time allows. On Saturday December 16 we will rehearse all choruses with orchestra, first covering the trumpet and timpani choruses (GLory to God, Hallelujah, Worthy..) and then proceeding in order without those previously rehearsed choruses.

Here are the important points from last night. Temper all forte's. That means never push so that you cannot hear your neighbor or the other sections. This takes more discipline, in that you cannot relinquish your energetic breath support! But you must not overpush the voice. Basses, we need to work more clearly to keep the voice very 'clean', nice and focused. The tendency is still to let it get back in the throat and hooty. When you think of keeping the low ranges 'on the teeth' that helps the sound tremendously. Please write in that direction so you will think of it in advance of the time you need it!

Chorus, on No.26 please re-insert the break between "All we/Like Sheep". We had it last year, but have not addressed that yet. It should happen each time, or else we will be saying something troublesome!

On "Lift up your heads" remember that the 8th note pickups "the Lord of Hosts" need to be clear, and 'on the teeth' when in the lower register. Remember that No.35, "Let all the angels" is not to be pushed. Remember that the word "King" should be sung on the vowel, as if there were no [ng]. Similarly, the word "world" in "Behold the Lamb of God" should have the [L] left out until the very, very end [it belongs to the [D] of "world"] so that it does not twist our vowels.

Our next 2 rehearsals are extremely important, so please do all you can to be on time and stay until the end. For next week, please consider: No. 35, He Trusted- the quarter notes are short!
No.46, Since by Man: Practice this on legato vowels only, as we did.
In general, review detail!

Have a great week,
Love, Kent

Dear Chorus,

I neglected to mention two things last night! First, Don Malin celebrated his 65th anniversary of singing Messiah with us last night. He first sang it on the very day of the Pearl Harbor invasion. Don, it was a joy to have you with us last night! Second, the annual Christmas Concerts are taking place at St. Ignatius on Sunday afternoon. The 4:30 pm show is sold out, but general tickets are available for the 2 pm show. The Respighi Laud to the Nativity is a wonderful, wonderful piece!
