Dear Chorus,
Good work last night! I'm very excited for our next rehearsals, which will be devoted exclusively to Messiah. We will be sitting in the same order as last night, and Kathleen is working on a seating chart for the December 14 and 16 rehearsals and the concert. Note that we will be adding a rehearsal on January 2nd at Turtle Bay exclusively for Rossini, which will be fun!
We talked a good deal about pacing last night. The thing I would add today is that when we sing soft, it takes more energy than when we sing at higher dynamics. So the energy pacing is one thing and is QUITE different from the pacing of the voice itself (dynamics). Be prepared to challenge yourself on the energy quotient- think of the experience as one long crescendo of energy to the end. And consider that a crescendo of intention and specificity as well!
I leave you with a quote from my friend John Maclay -
"What we do in singing and playing this marvelous music is an important, humanitarian, and liberating act. A hand across centuries, in celebration of the triumph of the human spirit against all attempts to harness it."
Have a great week!
