Trout Tavern
The Trout. I have been researching my family tree over many many years and just recently came across your website. The reason I discovered your site was that I was trying to confirm the existence of The Trout in Bristol, as it was said that my great-grandfather on my mother's side, Henry Butler, was a publican at The Trout. Looking at your site, you appear to confirm this. Thank you. I may also have some information for you which you may find interesting and may be a clue as to why the Trout ceased to be. From old family letters, one great aunt describes her father as running the Trout and that two of her brothers died in a fire at the Trout in 1913. Do you or any of your fellow Bristol historians have access to any records or newspaper reports about the fire, which must have happened around July/August or September 1913 ? Your webpage on your site for the Trout does suggest it closed soon after, although Henry Butler had another son born there after the fire. If you take a look at the web-page I have written about my great-grandfather (http://www.calkin.co.uk/butler040.html), you will see four references to the Trout. I have linked each one to your site. Incidentally Henry Butler's father, also called Henry, was a publican in the East-end of London in Limehouse. |
