The Royal Naval Volunteer & The Old Armchair
According to the 1891 census Thomas Bradford was the licensed victualler at 17 King Street, which I believe was the Royal Naval Voluneer. His wife was a Hippisley to whom I am distantly connected. Also, in 1900 my gr-gr-grandmother's sister Alice Matthews gave her address as "The Old Armchair, Guinea St". However I see that this pub is shown as being on Redcliffe St in 1870. I would be interested in more info about this pub as I'd like to know whether Alice was the landlady or whether she was just living there. best wishes Mike |

Mike, Thanks for the info' on Thomas Bradford I will add it to the site as soon as I can. The Old Arm Chair isn't listed on the site as it was actually an off license, Sharps Bristol Directory 1904, lists ... "The Old Arm Chair; Miss Alice Matthews, beer retailer, off". As you say there was a pub called the Old Arm Chair in Redcliff Street, probably named because the near neighbours at the time included a furniture warehouse, a cabinet maker and a chair maker. Thanks Kevin. That's great. Does Sharp's show The Old Arm Chair in Guinea Street? Mike |

Yes sorry Mike, the Old Arm Chair, Guinea Street on the corner of Jubilee Place. Still standing I believe but no longer a shop. No record of the Old Arm Chair in Redcliff Street after 1877. Kevin. |
