Hi, I have just discovered that my ancesters ran one of these pubs. I think it is important to note that the cities were filling up after the Industrial Revolution and the decline of agriculture. This stretched the limits of any water supply available and the only safe way to survive was to drink beer instead of water. This was often something called small beer, which was not very strong. In David Copperfield, when he is about 10 years old, he goes into a pub and has a pie and beer for about a penny or so - can't quite remember the details. That was in London though - but I think it was the same everywhere. |
