Message:   The stepper motors were four coil steppers that were salvaged from scrap equipment and which I drove with a 5804 BiMOS II Unipolar Stepper-Motor Translator/Driver, from Farnell (p/n 572-469 £6.68 (in 2000)).
Remember that I abandoned the stepper motor idea early on when I found they couldn't provide enough torque - although with the redesigned (lighter) chassis they may have worked - so I didn't get a great deal done with that part of the circuit.
The beauty of the 5804 was that all you had to do was provide a step input signal (which could have been varied and would have effectively determined the speed) and a signal to tell it which direction to rotate.

Anyway, here's a link to the datasheet which shows how you should connect them up:

It would appear that the part is obsolete (although you may find some new old stock somewhere), although they do suggest a replacement. Best of luck.
