Absolutely disgusted
I would have updated my site with the new ESP stuff sooner, but I've been having an anti-"Smallville" hissy fit for a bit now and was too ****** off to actually do any site work. What am I so incensed by? The spoiler that Clark and Lana will be "consummating" their relationship in Season Five. Expect to see, within a day or two, an essay by me about what a horrible, horrible thing this is for the WB to do to Clark/Superman. Character assassination, plain and simple... And betrayal to me. More to come. |

Shirkie, I feel your pain. However, you must have wondered if it is really wise to trust your feelings to te linguistic accuracy of something from a hack blurb writer at the WB. Yeah, a normal person would use the word "consumate" to indicate sex. But a WB Hack blurb writer is much MORE likely to throw it in for titilation value ESPECIALLY if Clark and Lana DON'T Do Da Deed! Rant away! It'll make for a fun read! But some of us are waiting on tenterhooks to find out what you make of ol' "Immortal Enki" and company in the latest ES prophesy (what is it now? 23?) AND does EVERYTHING revolve around the number "28476"? (At this point I could probably write MORE of a hissy fit about that **** number than you will come up with about CLana. I've checked everything I could think of about "28476" and if it doesn't mean CJ Beppo was born on April 28, 1976, I just don't care anymore!) |

Dear Shirkie, I appreciate the passion and consideration you expressed in your "Purity" Article. Purity is a quality that has real amd inestimable value in a person's life. But why should the value of Purity BE "inestimable"? Two reasons come to mind. First, it is VERY hard to tell an interesting story about a "Pure" character. Horatio Alger and Charles Dickins were perhaps the last great practitioners of such tales and most readers are far more interested in the adventures of flawed and failed characters like Fagin and Mr Macauber than in the sterling mainstays of a David Copperfield or Philip Pirip. The producers of Smallville fully intended to portray a "Flawed" Superman in the form or a confused teenager trying to find a home on a world where he is utterly an alien and a personal truth when his reality transcends even basic physical laws. Clark makes mistakes, small, large and magnificently huge. Even the obvious excuses for Clark's "Bad behaviors, such as Red Kryptonite are shown to be merely releasing feelings works hard to hold in check. While this can be just the same as every other story on television, it's not necessarily bad storytelling. Off-hand I can't think of any dramas (television, movies, plays and literature) that have dealt with sexual purity in a serious manner (and I'm talking about culture since the 1940s). Even dramas which advocate chastity have, in virtually all cases, done so from the point of view of the consequences after abandoning chastity. There is a VERY stong possibility that Clark will learn in bitterness and tears that chastity is the proper behavior for him. With the spoilers indicating a Lexana relationship by the end of the season, you can count on Lana suffering greatly for her decisions to have sex with both Clark and possibly with Lex. Now, the WB probably DOES expect a ratings boost from all this and it is a VERY long shot to think the writers will treat the material with due respect and sensitivity. Still, it is very likely that the WB will end the storylines with fairly conventional disclaimers that casual sex is anyhting but casual. I can sympathize with your concern that the virgin quality of Superman has been maintained basically scrupulously since 1935 and it is a shock that Smallville is "taking that away". Personally, I think more interesting stories and more interesting "tension" can be maintained if the producers did not have Clark engaging in sex. Also, while you didn't say it in these words, the "virginity" of the Superman character will NOT be recoverable after the young Clark is portrayed having sex. This is significant, dramatically, culturally and, it seems, personally to people like yourself that are looking for role models of purity and uprightness. My second point is that culturally, even people who are most conscerned with sexual purity seem far less interested in "youthful indiscretions". Consider the range of conservative televangelists, congressmen, commentators, and priests who have been "caught with thier pants down" asked for forgiveness and are put right back in their positions of power and "moral authority". Even Pat Robertson was known as "the officer in charge of getting the liquor and girls" before he accepted Christ. On the plus side, this "forgiveness" might suggest that sexual purity is not quite the same thing as virginity - That a person's past mistakes are not held against them as they try to live a blameless life in the future. On the negative side I think it simply means that people like power and are "willing to forgive" powerful people because maybe then the "Power" will "rub off onto" the ones doing the forgiving. My dear Shirkie, I am truly sorry that it looks like the Smallville Powers That Be are preparing storylines which will disappoint you on such a personal level on such an important issue. As I've said, I had hoped they would do better than this. I hope it might be some consolation if I suggest two things for your consideration: First, What you do with your life has significance because it is significant to YOU - not because of any cultural model, role model, the guidance of a favorite story teller, even the guidance of a revered authority. What I wish for you is that all your relationships recognize your significance, honor it and treasure it. And Second, I am no longer a virgin. I have had a variety of experiences that give me what i think is a well-rounded point of view about sexual issues. Looking back, and adding up what my "sexual experience" has added to each of my relationships I'd have to say that I would have been no worse off in any of my relationships if I had maintained my virginity until marriage, there is a distinct possibility that my virginity would have enhanced some of my most treasured relationships, and a stong possibility that my virginity would have protected me in some of my most trying relationships. Go with God my friend! Remember to forgive your siblings! |

(my last post was EXACTLY 5000 characters so...) One final thought, I've been sort of disappointed in a lot of the new directions that Smallville is taking in Season 5. Basically, continuity looks even more weak than Season 4 (and that's saying a lot!) I discovered that a lot of what I've been enjoying about "Smallville" is actually not on-screen. What I've enjoyed is the rich, intricate back story created in the Beppo-verse and in the fan boards. If you are disappointed in "Smallville" (and you have that right) The efforts you've made in the Ezra Small Prophesies, etc. is still valuable, fun and (more or less) still "pure". I've been waiting weeks for your latest efforts putting Prophesy 23 together. I know I'm not the only one. OK? |

What an insightful response! I guess I'm just spoiled by how well THE ISSUE was handled on "L&C." That was truly the most beautiful thing ever. I wish I could put it into words! I still get misty whenever I watch it. And yes, I know I need to get Prophecy 23's page up!
