1DCLI Memorabilia 1953-1957 Bermuda & Caribbean
An active core group of Old Soldiers from "A" Company has spent some 16 months compiling 2 major websites with over 50 pages of photos and captions showing Bermuda activity from the Empire Clyde times until the Regiment returned to Blighty. Additionally there are 4 major Blog sites that open up threads of topical interest for an active browser to get involved. There are also other sites that cross relate to many more sites. We will happily publish .jpeg photos with captions. Simply browse the URL to lhs and email the editor for instructions.

Re: 1DCLI Memorabilia 1953-1957 Bermuda & Caribbean
On last count today there are around 34 contributors to the 2 main 1DCLI websites - several of whom are subscribers to both. With about two or three exceptions there are none from the remaining 5 Companies that made up 1DCLI in the Caribbean in 1954-1957.
Now how is it that an entire Regiment of about 800 men with changing postings over 3 years have so little to say about that era. Maybe there is a Bermuda Triangle after all and the entire Empire Clyde boatload just disappeared?
Nothing changes does it? Just a select energetic few lead the pack - or was National Service such a terrible chore that most wish to forget the experience? GOYA cheps and get emailing!

Given that I don't wear out my welcome on these LI Guestbook sites - the URL listed under my name shows 20 interlinked 1DCLI websites - many that can be browsed and subscribed to with comments, photos and captions. What I really wish for is Jamaica and Belize serving Old Mates to contribute.
Sadly - almost weekly now - we are reading of mates in their '70's passing on - and so few of 'em leave Army memories for their families and friends to view and read. Please don't let that happen to YOU! 1DCLI reader - we invite your contribution NOW!

USING INTERNET SEARCH TOOLS
Each passing day brings a fresh contact from Old Mates of the Caribbean era, who express amazement over the fact that there are so many 1DCLI websites available. The good news is of course that with each 'new' contact, we will gain 2 or 3 more referrals over time.
The Internet today offers wide choices for finding 'stuf' - not the least of which is the Google Search Engine. Try poking in "1DCLI Memorabilia" and see the 24 odd pages that float up within seconds. Most if not all search pages are for our sites.
Try also using this LI Message Board to send messages or 'Posts' or just 'Reply' to a thread such as this one.

Four of the five live video feeds on the 'A' Company site show various views of Bermuda as it is today in the 21st century. While there are many obvious changes since 1954, the shots of the beaches and the streets are pretty much unchanged since our posting there.

MEMOIRS OF A PAY SERGEANT
John Tenniswood, Sgt RAPC, was drafted to 1DCLI in February 1954 and sailed with us on the HMT Empire Clyde to Bermuda. As a Regular soldier he initially enlisted in the Armoured Corps but soon found himself shunted to pillar and post before being drafted to 1DCLI. Fortunately for we 1DCLI squaddies, John was appointed Prospect Garrison Pay Sergeant and also found himself in charge of the Garrison cinema. HONOUR ROLL FOR FORMER 1DCLI MATES OF THE CARIBBEAN AND BEYOND
One of the sadder tasks for a website editor is to record the names of former Old Mates whom we shared time with in our youth in the '50's. Sadly in the past 2 years of publishing 1DCLI Memorabilia, a site that contains photos and memories of Bermuda and Jamaica, the Memoriale List is growing and there are other names that so far remain unreported.
The least that we can do is to record a Mention of them so that their name stands in perpetuity as a reminder for 'The Good Old Days' and also a reminder of the frailty of life and the challenge to accept that we are all growing older and reaching the autumn of our years.
If you know of an Old DCLI'ian whose name and rank and year of death that you would like to see recorded, please visit the URL opened in the icon lhs and email the editor with details.

RSM HAROLD ROYFFE 1DCLI
Recent banter among the "A" Company stalwarts of Bermuda times, has uncovered the fact that little - or worse - no photographic memorabilia of our feared and revered RSM, is published. Google searches and this Light Infantry Guestbook website tell us nothing about Harold Royffe.
I appeal to former 1DCLI'ians with Sennelager, Plymouth, Jamaica and overall West Indies service time, to conjure up some photos and anecdotes and email 'em to me please. Check out the icons lhs for my contact. Is it possible that Harold's family are contactable - somewhere in the UK?
DCLI history demands more mention of this man who directed the highest standards of military dress and behaviour and kept the Duke's to the forefront of the Light Infantry in the '50's. A fine RSM and a fine man.

TROOPSHIP EMPIRE CLYDE ASSOCIATION of OLD SOLDIERS
Many of we enthusiastic DCLI bloggers are developing an original suggestion by John Tenniswood ("A" Coy Pay Sergeant, Prospect Garrison Bermuda) to commemorate the voyage of the Empire Clyde out of Liverpool in February 1954, bound for the Caribbean. The topic is wide open for constructive contributions by 1DCLI soldiers who qualify. Much banter is recorded on the DCLI Blog site - see URL icon lhs - browse the hotlinked web address to read down the messages and maybe offer one yourself.
We extend an open invitation - as always - for Old 'shipboard' Mates who served throughout the West Indies after leaving Plymouth by train and then Liverpool Docks all those years ago - to join us - in the unique camaraderie of our famous Regiment. STOP PRESS!! MEMOIRS ANNOUNCEMENT
It is always a pleasure to hear from an Old DCLI Soldier with Caribbean service and I can mention with great pride a liaison with Fraser Pakes (Cpl) "A" Company, Bermuda 1955-1957, that has resulted in the publication of his Military Memoirs. Click on the little icon lhs to open the website.
Fraser is in the unique situation of discovering that his father (RIP) kept most of his personal letters written home during his time abroad and has been able to compile an insightful story of his thoughts and experiences as a young soldier. So too are the memorable photographs of this historical period in the Regiment's history.
This is a fine example of co-operation between Old Mates with sufficient 'get up and go' attitudes to making it happen. Well Done Fraser. Let's hope that many other Old DCLI'ians with Caribbean service will GOYA!

PHOTO OF RSM HAROLD ROYFFE IN BERMUDA
After a lengthy search and some good old Light Infantry co-operation to search albums, Neil 'Swanny' Swanson has today forwarded a hitherto unseen photo of "A" Company on its first 'occupation' of Bermuda - straight off the Empire Clyde, February 1954. To cap it all, I've been able to crop a reasonable image of the RSM giving the Royal Salute to the Governor in the march past. This is a real discovery and hopefully an encouragement to others to search their old kitbags.

RSM Harold Royffe & RSM Jan Passmore, Caribbean '54-'57:
As will be quite obvious to any reader of these Messages, there is a search going on for good quality photographs of both the above RSMs of our time in the West Indies. Remarkably, there is not, so far, one clear shot that is reproducible from ANY source and I have searched the SCLI website to no avail.
Someone, somewhere must have a decent photo that they will permit us to use. I am in touch indirectly with the Royffe Family and promises are being followed up, but we draw a blank so far as the Passmore Family is concerned and any pursuit there will be an invasion of privacy to Jan's widow.
So, over to any one or more of you, who hold dear the memories and leadership of these 2 fine men and under whom it was a pleasure to serve.
