Powerful video - What Do Native Americans Want?
I got several emails today about a really powerful video. It's on YouTube and Native tube and it's called: What Do Native Americans Want? It's a collaborative work by a lot of Native American activists. Their intent is to show how New Age appropriation of our culture turns into minstrelsy. They collected photos of non-NDNS playing Indian and juxtaposed them with minstrelsy from the distant past and the near past. It can be appreciated on many levels. It starts out by saying let’s talk about what we don’t want. Then it zooms in on a definition of minstrel show: a uniquely American phenomenon where whites portray non-whites in a deeply humiliating way. The whites are usually oblivious to the humiliation that the inflict. The song in the background is … You guessed it R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Anyone who wants to feel how NDNs feel about the cultural appropriation our spiritual practices should watch this video with an open mind. If you see yourself, then you’ve got some changes to make. This is the description of the video: “I had several cultural activist groups send me the worst examples of minstrelsy they could find and I made of collage of examples from the present placed next to examples from the past.
