Is White Eagle Medicine Woman genuine?

I've been hearing about some protests that Native Americans have organized about White Eagle Medicine Woman. Can you tell my why they are doing this? I heard they shut down several of her workshops in Ohio, Texas and Michigan. What's wrong with her?

Re: Is White Eagle Medicine Woman genuine?

Susan, no she is not genuine.

There is no doubt.

White Eagle Medicine woman AKA Rachel Holzwarth AKA Suraj Holzwarth is NOT an American Indian and her practices are deeply offensive to legitimate tribal political and spiritual leaders. She's another fraud who claimed to learn Seneca ways in her childhood, but won't state her clan or give her real name or parents names.

This blog from the Nokomis learning center in Okemos, Michigan explains it well.

And there's a huge thread at NAFPS

The Ohio tour went private; it wasn’t "shut down."

The things that infuriate and outrage Native people the most are that she desacralizes the drum by making a spectacle of it, by putting human ashes in it and by putting human blood (supposedly of a warrior) on it. These things are big no nos in many Native traditions. Her practices are very, very offensive and very, very illegitimate.

Michigan Indians have demanded that she not sound her drum in Michigan, that she stop wearing her regalia and that she return all endangered raptor and illegal eagle feathers to the Michigan Department of Fish and Wildlife. This was accomplished last Friday when the authorities escorted Ms. Holzwarth to the feathers and forced her to return them.

Rachel Holzwarth freely chose to violate the American Indian Religious Freedom Act (42 U.S.C. 1996; AIRFA) that makes it a felony for a non-NDN to have feathers of protected raptors.

Last Friday, she paid the consequences for it.

Re: Is White Eagle Medicine Woman genuine? Update on WE protests

White Ego Woman UPDATE:

As expected,

White Eagle Medicine Woman AKA Rachel Holzworth

Is not living up to her end of the bargain after her meeting with REAL NDN elders.

She met with REAL grandmothers in public on 5/2/08 at the Troy Community Hall in Livernois, MI and agree to:

1.) Not to play her big drum in Michigan
2.) Not to wear her regalia
3.) Not to claim her drum, herself or her donations are blessed by the elders
4.) Not to claim that anything she teaches is Native American and to remove all her false claims from her website.

On Friday May 2, 2008. Fish and Wildlife removed all eagle feathers from her possession since she IS NOT Native American and is violating the law in possessing them.

Protesters have been checking up on her, but she finds way to get around doing what she said she would.
Naturally, she's spinning what happened in Michigan to make herself look like a persecuted victim instead of the law breaker she is.

She still falsely claims to be Seneca on her website.
She is still claiming that her thousand dollar workshops provide people with "Native Medicine Wheel" teachings and her internship application still asks people if they know how to do a sweat lodge. She also falsely claims that she meets with local elders and finalizes all plans before playing her drum and conducting workshops.

You show support by ordering shirts from Bryan Half Day by sending an email to: bryanhalf@aol.com
(that’s AOL dot com)

That say:
"Our Religion is Not for Sale"
And
"They took our land, our ways and our children. Now they sell our religion."

If the "GrandMother Drum 2008 USA - Healing Waters Tour" comes to your area, he is also willing to teach you how to deal with him/her.

Even after stating in public that her ceremonies are not native and that they were created out of whole cloth by herself and her supporters, she continues to disrespect the Michgan elders.

Here's her schedule:

June 17, 2008- West Yellowstone, Montana
Language of One: Metatron Graduation Ceremony

June 18-21, 2008 - West Yellowstone, MT
The Gathering of One, Global Eden Event

June 26-29, 2008 Spiritual Unity of the Tribes Gathering Bear Butte Lodge, South Dakota

August 9, 2008- Homer, Alaska
GrandMother Drum Prayerformance

August 10, 2008- Homer, Alaska
Illuminating the Sacred Heart Teachings

August 14-19, 2008 Homer, Alaska
Morning Dove Lodge: Shamanic Women's Healing Ceremonies Launching of the Rainbow Fire Dream Lodge.

Tribes around Yellowstone National park should be warned about her so anyone who reads this board is in that area and has contact information please post it here.

We have some sketchy info on leaders of the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho and the Wind River Rez, but we would use good contact info.

Re: Dennis Banks on White Eagle Medicine woman

Susan,

White Eagle woman has sparked a lot of controversy in Michigan and offended and appalled many of hereditary spiritual elders. What she does is a mockery of indigenous spirituality. She can only harm herself and others if she persists with her dog and pony show.

The elders have stated that is the responsibility of A.I.M.(the American Indian Movement) to act to preserve the integrity of our precious spiritual practices.

Dennis Banks, the National Director of A.I.M., recently commented on her.

Here is the official A.I.M. statement:

The Detroit area is the host to many different Native Americans from all walks of life and several different Nations, all live here in peace and harmony. It is seldom told of the quiet ways in which these people live, but the blatant abuse of their culture needs to be stopped and the Detroit area appears to be an initial ground for this fight.

Rachel Holzwarth, aka MaAnand Suraj, aka Suraj Holzwarth, aka White Eagle Medicine Woman, was forced to relinquish her eagle feathers to Fish and Wildlife Friday, May 2, 2008, during a meeting in Troy, Mi. The standing room only meeting was held with ~100 Native Americans from several nations in live attendance and an untold number via teleconference from across the continent. These people were protesting this woman's use of our religious ceremonies and sacred items.

The National Director of the American Indian Movement (AIM), Dennis Banks, wishes to make a statement to the people of all cultures and nations regarding this and similar issues.
Our ceremonies and spirituality are the last thing we have; the only things that haven't been completely taken away. It is time for us to retake those final descriptions of cultural identity.

All references to our ceremonies and cultural practices are not be performed by any non-native people who are not fully accepted by our communities.
All AIM Support and AIM National Chapters are to be vigilant in their duty to forestall these actions by any person portraying themselves as "shamans" professing or portraying Native American customs.

AIM is in full support of the actions being taken by the Michigan Chapter to stop this woman and make notice to any and all practitioners that AIM is now standing against this cultural theft.

"Genuine" is not a term that could rationally be applied to Ms. Holzworth.

There has been a lot of spin, put out into the feminist/progressive communities. Don't accept it without looking at both sides.

You can learn more about the status of the protests at these sites:
