Gaboratory - The Way it Was

Pictures from Gaboratory factory in Burbank, CA. These were taken before Gabor died, before Steve Gerlach, before Gaboratory International, before Maria stole the equipment and some Japanese moron filed a meritless lawsuit claiming he had the right to the Gaboratory name.

This is where all of the original pieces were made after Gabor moved to Burbank from LaBrea (where he was temporarily after moving from the original location on Melrose).

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

tinyclown, the picture behind Gabor desk close to the super XXX Shirt. that picture is so rare and hard to get..pictures of wild Malibu boys back in the days include Bill Wall & Travis Walker and the rest of the gangs. you right, and that Japanese moron (Hiro)actually suing and claim that they own the name of the rights and everything of Gaboratory, their new name Gaboratory International and they changed again which is Gabor Inc USA. I knew only some people that have the original pieces, not the Gaboratory International, or Gabor Inc USA. Some even the old vintage gabor pieces does not even have the stamped at all. Thanks for the pics and insde scoop brother it gave us a closer look where Gabor and the rest of his crews did back in the days. RIP Gabor Nagy

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

Five easy Gabor pieces on a background by Travis Walker and Bill Wall.

A couple of things are worth noting. The two bracelets have T-bars that date to before Gabor started using the twin skull T-Bar with the "Gaboratory" stamp. The wallet chain is 26 inches and has a quick-change stainless clip at the wallet end. I was never a big fan of the T-bar and ring combination that everyone uses to attach the chain to the wallet. There were problems with the casting of the longer links that make up the chain. Early generations of these links had a tendency to break off at the ends. The chain had a skull cross pendant at one point, but after wearing it like that for a while I decided to go for a simpler (and lighter) look so I had Gabor take it back off. There are versions of the belt clip that have skulls incorporated, but I opted to go with a simpler and cleaner version of that particular piece also. Sometimes less is more, particularly when you're wearing several pieces at the same time.

The background is the back of a BWL vest that Travis made for me back when they all worked out of the garage at Bill's folks house.

Enjoy.

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

Great looking silver. Notice how clean the shop looks in those pictures? Was that the way Gabor kept the place or was it cleaned up for the pics?

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

That's pretty much the way the shop looked, particularly in the early years when Reid (of Reid MFG) was doing a lot of Gabor's assembly work. In the early days Gabor was there pretty much all the time, but in later years that was not the case. These photos were taken sometime in 1998 and it is probably Gerlach whose back can be seen in two of the shots sitting at the main assembly station. Gabor was not there when these photos were taken. The other person appearing in one of the photos is Gabor's business partner Pasquale Zaza. Gabor went through a few other assemblers between Reid and Gerlach. Obviously these photos were taken on a day when they were not casting or getting pieces ready for shipment. The large tool box in the middle of the room sometimes had dozens of pieces spread out on it when stuff was about to go out to Japan.

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

Actually, I will correct myself, that is the polishing station that Gerlach is sitting at. The large black thing that says "Gaboratory" on it on the back wall is an uncut piece of hide, not a t-shirt.

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

Reid's full name is Reid Rolland if I remember correctly. The spelling of his last name could be off a little bit. He sells/sold his own silver to Japan under the name "Reid MFG" and you can find pictures online of some of his pieces. The easiest pieces to recognize are the Tiki's. Reid worked for Gabor for a number of years. Reid's role in making Gaboratory as prominent as it was has gone largely unnoticed and that is a shame, but that is often the case when your name is not on the front door. Travis may know where you can find Reid.

Gabor had several different people making leather for him in the later years. I moved away from California in 1995, so my knowledge of who did what after that is limited or second-hand.

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

That's pretty much all I have as far as Gabor is concerned. I sold, traded or gave away many of the pieces I had before I left LA. The only other unusual thing I have is one of the original 300 Gaboratory catalogues. I have a bunch of BWL pieces, mostly leather, but nothing extraordinary.

I never worked at Gaboratory or for Gabor in any way. I met him through a common friend who owned Wood Cycles on LaBrea. Gabor had his workshop there for a very short amount of time, probably a month or two at most, in 1992. I visited Gabor's showroom on Melrose only one time before it closed. Back in those days, Gabor could not afford to have actual silver pieces in his showcases, so he made a bunch of assembled necklaces and bracelets out of wax and painted them silver so the customers could see what the finished pieces would look like.

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

Amazing stuff. Thanks to all for those great pics. Seriously, it is great to preserve the history of the great silver masters.

Couple of questions,

what is the long rod with a gabor skull on it next to the two bracelets?

Does anyone havea picture of the back of that BWL jacket? There is a great hi-res pic on the BWL online shop site. But only of the front of it.

Finally, what about the gabor produced with A&G? I saw it in Ueno Tokyo with authentic looking guarantee cards, is that "Gabor produced by A&G" authentic. If so anyone own any? I had a good look, and it felt great, even if it was polished to a mirror finish.

Anyway, thanks again for those amazing pictures.

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

The "rod" between the two Gabor bracelets is a cocktail straw... Gabor made a lot of cool/weird things back in the days, including one of a kind wood/leather boxes with silver hardware, leather planners, boots and such. I'll try to find some better pics of these kind of items.

Re: Gaboratory - The Way it Was

Brother Saint, A&G for Gabor are just a tribute design, not really collaboration at all. i believe they already stop the production of it, Gabor inc USA (Japan owned) told them to stop manufacturing. Anyway tinyclown, slava, i was with Travis today and i was trippin i got a chance to hold some of original Gabor skull pieces that no stamp mark at all, its fuckin beautiful, once i come back from La i will post some pictures. include the the first original Gabor shop before La Brea, and suprising that i never know that Maria Nagy also help Gabor in designing & carving waxes. no wonder she took the equipments.tonight having a blast dinner with Logan in Santa Monica, will post some pics it when i come back brother Slava. we talk a lot about you too man.
