I make laminated bookmarks for most of my releases. They are a great way to pass information to readers and they (readers) tend to keep the laminated ones longer than the paper versions.

Arrange group booksignings with other authors local to you. Approach bookstores with a list of authors who wish to participate– try to get a "headliner"–the most well known author you know. Bookstore managers love this and will get involved planning a nice event.

Attend on-line chats whenever feasible—even if they aren’t your own. Support your colleagues and they will return the favor. Plus, more readers will ‘discover’ you.
If you can’t afford a printer, then learn to make your own hand-outs. Bookmarks are an easy thing to design and are relatively inexpensive to make. Most readers love them because they’re so useful.
If you have a website (which you really must) and a blog, then make sure you keep them up-to-date and let people know they exist! Going blog-hopping once or twice a month and show your support to others while getting your own name out there.

Promotion is just a part of being an author. And most of us will tell you that we rather be off working on our current WIP than promoting a book we have already finished. But it is a necessity if you want to sell books and get your name out there. Here are some basic promotion tips:
Put up a website with a blog
Create a newsletter to send out information on your books and what you are up to
Get your book reviewed
Join email groups such as on Google or Yahoo to promote your book and make connections
DENICE PATRICK
I go out and tell all my friends about it and post it on all the sites I visit regularly.
JESSICA RAYMOND
Get a blog! People (including me) love to read blogs and as a *reader* it’s good fun to keep up to date with your favourite writers’ lives as their next book is in the works. It’s a great way for people to keep in touch.
Join forums and online groups for writers, readers, and general romance-loving communities -- or whichever genre you’re writing towards. However, don’t just post when you want to promote something as you will risk looking like a "user" who is just capitalizing on your membership; regular contributions to the group and a genuine interest in your fellow members are much more valuable. You’ll probably make some good friends, too.
Keep in regular contact with those who are interested in your work. A blog, as I mentioned in point 1, makes this somewhat easier, but making sure your website (if you have one) is up-to-date is also important, and if anybody emails you to ask about your work – or to say they enjoyed it! – be sure to reply. You could also consider a newsletter if there seems to be a demand for it. |
