  1. Do you provide online courses?
There is a self study course for beginners on the Learn English Online web site. There is also a list of other on-line English courses on ourResources page. Because our sessions are open to everyone, we take a micro-learning approach, so they are mostly stand-alone, or run for a short time on a particular theme.

  2. Why are your web sites free?
We love English and we want to share our enjoyment of it as a language. We know we could do that and still charge for it, but so much of the information available on the Internet is given on a voluntary basis. The people who put it there know that they will be able to obtain information in the same way when they need it. The golden rule works and what is good for others turns out to be good for the individual, and we think that if you just want to make money then you\'re in the wrong job. Believe us: we are not against making money: we have a Donate button, but to be honest, the Learn English Network will never earn us as much as conventional teaching would. However, every penny we earn here means more to us than any hourly rate. People can give whatever they can afford, and we like that. All in all we find the Internet to be like most other communities, you get out what you put in.

  3. Do you really run Learn English on your own?

I have been asked this a lot during the voice chat conversation lessons. The answer is YES! Me, alone, no one else. I have asked people to help, but because there is no money involved, surprisingly no one has taken me up on the offer! Hmmm.

If you want to know more about me and why I do it look at my blog.

Unfortunately the Lern English PalTalk room is not open 24/7, it is only open at the times advertised in the forum. If you are having problems logging on to PalTalk you will need to speak to their help desk. The chat room on the forum is available all the time, but I'm not always logged on, however you can arrange to meet friends there any time. Your best chance of reaching me is to use the forum or this FAQ.

I find it's usually the children who introduce the parents to each other. ;-) It sounds to me as if you need to develop your small talk skills. These books might help you get started:- American Manners and Customs, Book 1 ISBN 0937630-11-X Common American Phrases in Everyday Contexts: A Detailed Guide to Real-Life Conversation and Small Talk ISBN13: 9780071405607 I hope this helps.

  6. Why don\'t British people consider themselves Europeans?
I\'m British and I consider myself European as well as a human being from planet Earth. Don\'t believe everything you read in the newspaper. That said, finding a sense of identity when you come from the UK can be fraught. We have an island mentality. It's not possible to download the videos but you could try to record it off your computer. (I'm not sure if this will work but try going to the original video - click on Menu - then click URL and copy and paste the URL into your browser. This will take you to the original video. Then you need to follow these instructions:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGoyTIGGHXA) I have never tried this myself, but good luck.

I think you'll be surprised how well your kids will take to this tech. It's a tool, it's becoming essential to be computer literate. The most important thing is to keep them safe. Make sure they talk to you about anything they do online, and if anything disturbs them. I've posted some links on the forum to sites that advise parents about this. Do things together on the computer too. Some families use the PC as a cheap baby sitter, but it can be much more than that. Don't use it as a reward / punishment. My main rule would be "no computers (or TV) in the bedroom or behind locked doors". If they're not willing to let you see what they're doing, they probably shouldn't be doing it. Once they've started school talk to their teacher about what might be appropriate to the curriculum they'll be following.

  14. Do you know any kids educational software (free)?
there's lots out there, but beware of stuff that's linked to branding (sometimes the main aim is to get your kids hooked on fluffy toys, crisps or burgers). This site makes some recommendations:- http://jennymannion.com/kidscomputergames/ And when they are a bit older you could try:- http://www.childrensuniversity.manchester.ac.uk/

Hi Dyego, You would have to ask Yuku to change your name, or just start a new account. Then go to one of Lynne's posts and click on "Interact" under her name. Add her as a friend, and when she has accepted the friend request you will be able to send her your Skype id in a private message. Friend first - then send the Skype id.
