  2. Our daughter just finished her freshman year at a [private] Christian school. This next school year we want to homeschool. Do we need to contact the state of Indiana about this change?
  3. I need to have a work permit for my 16 year old. We are not new at homeschooling, but are military and are fairly new to Indiana. Where do I get a work permit for her?

  1. Is educating your children at home legal in Indiana?
The short answer is YES! The long answer is this: Homeschooling, or educating your children in a manner and place OTHER than in a State Public School, is legal everywhere in the U.S.. There are, however laws and regulations and, frankly, hoops some parents must go through in order to assure the state your children are being educated. Check out the "New Homeschoolers" section of the IHEN web site for more detailed information. http://ihen.org/IHEN-NewHSers/

No. You should provide your current school a letter stating that you are going to transfer your child to another private school, and please provide a copy of all her records to you (or to the new school, which is YOUR homeschool.) You can do this any time during the school year. There is a sample of a transfer letter on the IHEN web site at http://www.ihen.org/content/documents/forms/student_xfer.htm

You should be able to get a permit from your local school district. For some reason, state schools still have a lock on the work permit business -- probably just to assure that not too many kids get into the workplace too early. ;-) The School Secretary should be able to help you out. Just tell him or her that your child is privately schooled, and you need to fill out and sign his work permit. You are, after all, the parent, and IMO, YOU should be the one granting permissions for your child, not the state. But that's the way it is.
